They would have had ones for water and yellow painted ones for Benzin. This does not appear to have ever been painted yellow, so it might have been the water version, but it does smell like gasoline. Marked ESB42 on the lid. Some dents and dings, but still usable, at least for gasoline; I would not put drinking water in it.
